"PanchoVilleneuve ST" (PanchoVilleneuve)

I’m sure I’m totally super late to this party but FUCKING FINALLY. Since it’s news to me and I want to feel like I GOT THE BIG SCOOP, it starts at $26,900, the only option is the performance package which for $2100 adds 25 horsepower, an LSD, 19 inch wheel with P-Zeroes, bigger brakes and a loud valve for the exhaust.
I want one real real bad.

I liked it but there’s a our note on the first page in that there is no orange, yellow, green, or purple and the blue is a weird powder blue. Red is okay. But.....meh.
Hyundai - make a yellow one and I will trade my FOST for it.

If I wasn’t broke, I would in a heartbeat. Performance Package in peformance blue. As much as I love my Focus ST I still feel betrayed by Ford for what they’re doing not just to their North American lineup, but to the ST badge. That’s what stings the most. ST used to mean something, it was Ford saying “hey, car nerds, we still love you, so we’re going to build manual-only cars with precisely too much power and since we know the only people buying them will be drivers who give a shit we’re going to tune the chassis so that if you don’t respect what you’ll driving you’ll turn a fun afternoon drive into permanently increased insurance premiums.” But then they started selling the Fiesta ST-line so you’d get a body kit and nothing else and now it’s just a way for insecure dads to buy a crossover without being teased by their friends because HEY IT’S AN ST, BRO.
I’ve been a big fan of what the Koreans have been doing for the past decade or so, how they did what Toyota did in the late 80s/early 90s with Lexus and spent serious money and effort on going LOOK WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF, and even though they’re now making cars that are serious “why aren’t you at least considering this” options in every segment they compete in, they haven’t lost the whole “company with something to prove” mindset, so you get cars like the whole Genesis line, the Kia Stinger, and now this, going incredibly far above and beyond what they needed to do. They’ve overcome a negative reputation by replacing it with massive amounts of giving a fuck, and I love that.
Also, a big part of why I want one is because the guy who set up the chassis did so exactly how I set up cars in Gran Turismo, starting with super-extreme settings that made it undrivable, doing some laps, and dialing things back bit by bit until they tamed it.

Personally, I love the blue. It’s unusual, and I like how they are basing their whole performance branding around a color that stands out not because of how loud and bright it is but because of how they are using a subtle shade to say SPORTSCAR!

The blue
looks so good with the red trim.

I like it because it’s both well thought out and completely stupid at the same time.

With the performance package it’s
90% of a Civic Type R for 80% of the money.

I like that they at least attempted something truly quirky.

I feel like if you’re going to bother shelling out for the N, you might as well get the performance pack. Otherwise just get the vanilla veloster.
I understand why you feel betrayed by Ford. I'm pretty disappointed in them for giving up on cars. That being said, I understand why products like the Egde ST and Explorer ST exist. If they aren't going to sell cars, they still want to sell something that appears sporty. Just try to remember that nothing Ford does now can diminish how you feel about your car. Someday, Mazda will sell a crossover and call it a Miata. And I will mourn the fact that they probably won't be selling anything resembling my Miata, but I won't let the fact that they repurposed the name drag me down.

If you want to have your faith restored in the car enthusiast scene, go on
F
acebook and read the comments on ads for the new Eclipse crossover bullshit thing. They are full of people posting pictures of their DSMs and going “that’s not an Eclipse, this is.” It’s wonderful.

It appeals to my sensibilities specifically. The suicide door on the driver’s side would let me put my chair in easily just like my RX-8. I know I’m an ultra-niche market, but I love that it has this.

I sort of want to like the Veloster.
I like the one door
I like the two doors
But it’s the same car and it doesn’t sit well in my brain.
I like symmetry .
Thank goodness we get the Hyundai i30.
Two doors on the left
Two doors on the right

I'm actually ok with that. My theory is that all of the good car names have been taken, so you might as well recycle the good ones. That Eclipse crossover is ugly, and it sucks that they don't make fun cars anymore, but I'm really not bothered by them calling it an Eclipse. Naming a vehicle in 2019 an Eclipse has absolutely no impact on somebody's car from the 90s.

I really like the overall price/performance of the performance package but the more I think about it the more the back end of this car bugs me. Allow me to explain.
The original Veloster made up for its very sloped rear roofline by using a 2-piece glass hatch like the Prius. When combined with the optional panorama sunroof, this made for tons of glass, nearly uninterrupted from the front to the back of the car.
The new Veloster ditches the 2-piece glass hatch for a more traditional upright hatch, but the roof is still sloped, which makes the hatch and rear window tiny.
The not-quite panoramic sunroof (it has a full-width sunroof panel but no additional glass behind it) helps make the cabin feel airier, even if it doesn’t help rear visibility. But you can’t have it on the N.
Another benefit of the 2-piece hatch on the original was a it made for a huge hatch opening.
On the new one? Not so much.
That part isn’t so bad and doesn’t bug me like the tiny rear window, but still.
I could deal with the tiny window if I had a sunroof. Just give the N a sunroof option, Hyundai! Or even better, give us the i30 (a.k.a. Elantra GT) N with a sunroof! These cars aren’t so hardcore that they can’t have their structural integrity mildly compromised, as an option.

There isn’t a suicide door.
Just a conventional coupe style door on the drivers side and a conventional saloon style two door on the passenger side.
Sorry mate.

Oops, you’re right. I totally remembered that wrong. Wishful thinking I guess. The single door still fits me though.
I don’t know where my brain was yesterday. I was also getting GM platforms mixed up. Maybe I should pay more attention to my posts.

My friend has a current gen Veloster in yellow and is sad the new N won’t be offered in the color, so I photoshopped it in yellow. I now believe it needs to be offered in yellow
